Designing and Prototyping Multimodal Commands

چکیده

Designing and implementing multimodal applications that take advantage of several recognitionbased interaction techniques (e.g. speech and gesture recognition) is a difficult task. The goal of our research is to explore how simple modelling techniques and tools can be used to support the designers and developers of multimodal systems. In this paper, we discuss the use of finite state machines (FSMs) for the design and prototyping of multimodal commands. In particular, we show that FSMs can help designers in reasoning about synchronization patterns problems. Finally, we describe an implementation of our FSM-based approach, in a toolkit whose aim is to facilitate the iterative process of designing, prototyping and testing multimodality.

Designing Multimodal Interactive Systems

The design of interactive systems, with novel devices or scenarios, is a complex task, given that none, or almost none, information regarding its use is available. This paper argues for a design process that leverages the availability of new interactive devices to build high-fidelity prototypes that allow for unconstrained usage, thus immersing the user in the interaction scenario. Based on fin...

Usability framework for the design and evaluation of multimodal interaction

The design and evaluation of multimodal interaction is difficult. For designers in industry, developing multimodal interaction systems is a big challenge. Although past researches have presented various methodologies, they have addressed only specific cases of multimodality and failed to generalise their methodologies to a range of applications. In this paper, we present a usability framework f...

Designing a Conversational Interface for a Multimodal Smartphone Programming-by-Demonstration Agent

In this position paper, we first summarize our work on designing the conversational interface for SUGILITE – a multimodal programming by demonstration system that enables a virtual agent to learn how to handle out-ofdomain commands and perform the tasks using available third-party mobile apps in task-oriented dialogs from the user’s demonstrations. We then discuss our planned future work on ena...

Wizard of Oz Prototyping: When and How?

Progress in speech and language processing and multimodal systems technologies has led to the fact that prototyping with the Wizard of Oz (WOZ) system simulation technique is increasingly being used in systems design. When prototyping with WOZ, one or more 'wizards' simulate part or whole of the performance of the system being designed, while interacting with users who preferably believe themse...

Prototyping Multimodal Interfaces with the SMUIML Modeling Language

In this position paper, we present an approach geared toward rapid prototyping of multimodal interfaces with SMUIML (Synchronized Multimodal User Interfaces Markup Language) and HephaisTK toolkit. The goal of SMUIML and HephaisTK is to offer developers with: on one side, a language allowing clear description of human-machine multimodal dialog and control over the way multiple input modalities h...
